NYSED's Literacy Initiative, Literacy Briefs, and Advanced Literacy Briefs provide valuable anchors to inform instruction and instructional leadership. This module will support educational leaders in leveraging the Science of Reading and the needs of our linguistically diverse students to support instructional improvement and student achievement.*

    *PLCS, in conversation with NYSED and in response to changes to APPR, has redesigned our Lead Evaluator Training Program. We have designed half-day three hour sessions that you can choose from to design your own Lead Evaluator program. These sessions meet NYSED expectations for APPR Lead Evaluator recertification.

    All leaders new to their district or role will need to attend our Foundations in Leading Leaders session to meet the requirements for NYSED's Lead Evaluator Training. Please check your district's APPR plan to determine the number of days/hours approved by NYSED for your district's Lead Evaluator Training.

    New York State's Dignity for All Students Act (The Dignity Act) took effect July 1, 2012 and was amended, effective July 1, 2013. This training is designed to review the requirements as outlined in the law and focus on implementation issues and best practices. Participants will:

    • Review the law, definitions, and requirements of the Dignity Act
    • Share best practices and lessons learned
    • Raise awareness and sensitivity to the effects of bullying, harassment and discrimination
    • Identify strategies for prevention and intervention
    • Examine investigative practices

    Blue Ribbon Commission Educator Forum: Considerations for Changing Graduation Requirements

    In this session, educators will engage in conversation regarding the New York State Education Department's (NYSED) four transformations based on the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Commission as it pertains to changes in graduation requirements. Educators will review anticipated elements of these transformations and discuss ideas, implications, and provide feedback to assist NYSED in determining next steps.

    Through the eyes of leaders, we will explore Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within our current educational settings. In this module we will examine the CR-SE framework to gain an understanding of how it can guide instruction and operations within your school/district. We will explore each of the four principles of Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education: Welcoming and affirming environment, High expectations and rigorous instruction, Inclusive curriculum and assessment, and On-going professional learning. By using different protocols and strategies, we will identify areas of opportunity and create pathways to improve the student and staff experience overall through the CR-SE lens.*

    Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a framework that helps educators identify students' academic, behavioral, and social-emotional strengths and challenges and provide differentiated support for students based on their needs. As school and district leaders, in this module we will create shared definitions of MTSS components and use NYSED's MTSS-I Pilot framework to explore implementation strategies and learn how to utilize data to effectively improve school and district practices. By developing your MTSS-I skill set, leaders will be able to support different teams of faculty and staff to meet the needs of each and every student while continuing to improve your Tier 1 instruction and the overall effectiveness of your programming.*

    In response to NYSED'S Literacy Initiative, the Science of Reading and meeting students' academic needs, this study group will provide a recurring opportunity to convene with colleagues to collaborate around leading for literacy and the systemic and classroom-based practices that will support all students' literacy development. As schools and districts pursue similar aims and navigate similar obstacles, space for reflecting on and sharing practices and navigating challenges can serve as a forum for mutual support. During the sessions, time for grade level focus work groups (Elementary and Secondary) will be built in.

    We welcome teams of teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, reading specialists, department chairs, and all for whom literacy instruction is integral, to join us as leaders of literacy.

The first part of the session will be educational in nature with participants learning about new books that have been published, how to find high-quality engaging literature, and identifying ways to continue to identify diverse books. Time will also be spent developing cultural competence with a critical eye towards eliminating problematic titles from current collections. The second part of the workshop will give participants time to create booklists, develop promotional plans, and work on their collection development with colleagues.

    Librarians and library services play a significant role in the literacy development of young people. Through their expertise and the use of library resources, librarians positively influence the implementation and success of evidence-based literacy instruction as defined by NYSED's Literacy Briefs and current research about literacy and libraries. In this workshop, participants will examine research findings and instructional resources, collaborate with peers, and develop plans for supporting and enhancing student's literacy and social development.

    Research findings show that wide reading can foster the development of positive social behaviors and attitudes, including empathy. Wide reading remains one of the most accessible ways for young people to build background knowledge about topics of personal interest and academic study. In this session, Donalyn Miller will share research findings, instructional moves, resources, and programming ideas for promoting wide reading. Session includes work session time to explore resources and collaborate with peers.

  • Crisis Intervention training provides schools staff with needed tools and techniques

    Eighteen teachers and support staff members from our component districts attended Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Initial Certification Training at our Harrison location this week, learning safe, effective behavior management techniques designed to maintain the care, welfare, safety and security of all involved in a crisis. 

    “Managing aggressive and violent behavior has become an essential skill relevant to all school personnel,” said Brandon Cruz, Supervisor of School Safety & Facilities. “

    Participants explored a range of "risk behaviors" and practiced appropriate de-escalation strategies designed to address these behaviors in a professional way.

    Read the personal essay by David Mumper, a Resource Specialist with the Hudson Valley Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network, appearing this week at Chalkbeat.     Mr. Cruz joined us recently as Supervisor of School Safety and Facilities, assists the centers of Southern Westchester BOCES and its 32 component districts with training, safety planning and keeping abreast of the latest mandates and industry knowledge.
